East Avenue Traffic Enforcement - Results

During our 7 day traffic enforcement campaign, February 8 thru February 14, 2012, Officers of the Eaton Police Division spent an average of 10 hours a day on speed enforcement on East Avenue.  Officers made a total of 34 traffic stops resulting in 5 citations, and 1 OVI arrest during the 7 day period.  We are very pleased with the number of stops and are glad the number wasn't higher.  As we previously stated, our goal was to slow people down and make everyone aware of the speed limit on East Avenue.  During the speed enforcement campaign Officers reported that vehicles were doing a great job of slowing down and being mindful of the 35 mph speed limit.

Thank you all for your efforts in slowing down and please continue to obey the 35 mph speed limit on East Avenue.

Community Advisory - Burglaries in Eaton

During the month of January, 2012 we investigated 18 burglary and/or breaking and entering cases at residences within the City.  We have seen a steady pattern of increase citywide in such crimes over the last 3 months.  By keeping the community aware of this criminal activity we hope to reduce the number of these cases and apprehend the criminals targeting residences within our City.  We need your help in catching our criminals.  Please report any and all suspicious to the Eaton Police Division at 937-456-5531.

One scam to particulary watch for is telephone calls from criminals claiming to be from a business.  Make sure to check the credibility of any business you speak to over the phone.  Potential burglars will call you pretending to be a construction company or roofing company and will try to get you to tell them when you won't be home.  They'll call, engage you in a conversation, and attempt to schedule an appointment with you.  The key in the scam isn't in setting the appointment, it's in getting the homeowner to say when they will or will not be home.

If a salesman calls and you are  interested in meeting with them, it's not unusual to tell them, "I won't be home tomorrow until 4, so why don't we meet at 5."  With that simple statement you've told them an opportune time to break into your home.

Never tell a phone solicitor when you will not be home.  It's a good idea to have your home phone forwarded to your cell phone when you aren't home so it never appears your home is empty.

If you receive a suspicious call, or repeated calls, from anyone claiming to be from a roofing or construction company please call the police division at 937-456-5531.

Examples of Suspicious Activity:

-Unknown vehicles driving through your neighborhood
-Unknown people walking down your street
-Unfamiliar vehicles or people at your neighbor's house
-People knocking on your door and running away when you answer
-Phone calls from solicitors who are pushy, won't provide you with an address, or who question you about your schedule

It Can Wait
Take out your wireless device. Read the last text message you received out loud. Would reading or responding to that text message from behind the wheel of a moving vehicle be worth the risk of getting into a car accident or worse? Chances are, the text message could wait.
Watch "The Last Text" movie below for true stories of the dangers of texting while driving.
